History Cape Girardeau Country Club dates back to 1920, when construction for a clubhouse began. The two-story building with basement measured 61 feet by 60 feet and had a veranda extending across the width of the building. The grand opening of the clubhouse was held July 29, 1921, with a formal reception and dance.
On December 11, 1963 the building caught fire and was destroyed. The fire department was unable to contain the fire due to low pressure in the lines. In addition, the firemen had to deal with sub freezing temperatures that resulted in snow and sleet. Construction of a new clubhouse was begun in February 1965 and the formal opening was held December 11, 1965, exactly two years from the date of the fire. The course had been a 9 hole course prior. A second nine was added and it became the first 18-hole course in Cape Girardeau. Over the years changes have been made to the club. A swimming pool, driving range, and other amenities have been added. The course itself has undergone subtle changes that have made it the pristine layout that you see today. Generations of families have grown up here and love to tell the kids how it use to be.
